2010 Black Men of Labor Second Line

The annual second-line started in 1993, after the death of jazzman and raconteur Danny Barker. Johnson got together with musicians Greg Stafford and Benny Jones to create Black Men of Labor, an organization devoted to New Orleans' heritage.

Along with parading, the group mentors young musicians and honors working people -- from waiters to political leaders -- as it celebrates the city's craftsmen, chefs and Mardi Gras Indians.

I Walked in the rain for a very long time, back and forth forever, well it was for only about 5 hours but it sure felt a lot longer since I was soaked, cold and pretty miserable but after taking these series of streetcars shots I knew I had gotten something truly unique and outstanding that captured the mood I was after. It was well worth it indeed :)

Airline Motors Restaurant was built in 1937 and opened in 1939. It was built mainly from building material from Jefferson College gymnasium. Cypress beam supports in the kitchen and beams in the attic.

Opened as Airline Chevrolet Co. in 1937 selling Chevrolet automobiles, provided service station services, and wrecker services and repair shop. Airline Chevrolet Co. was a partnership of H.C. Cotham(operator) and A.L. Woods.

During the depression, sales practices by major auto companies, such as forcing unwanted models, forced on dealers caused the franchise to be given up.

The cafe was added in lieu of the auto dealership in 1939. Services included cafe, slot machines, service station, wrecker services and garage services as partnership H.C. Cotham and A.L. Woods. Mrs. Cotham was in charge of the cafe.

Built by Morris Terry in 1958, The LaPlace Frostop has become a fixture on Airline Hwy (US 61) in LaPlace, Louisiana. Mr. Terry leased out the restaurant until 1973 when his daughter Evelyn, and her husband Jimmie Toler, took over. Their daughter, Terry, joined her parents as owner-manager after graduating from LSU in 1993.
Even though The LaPlace Frostop has completed two renovations, the first in 1981 and again in 1996, it has retained its old-fashioned, drive-in atmosphere.

Today, The LaPlace Frostop continues to proudly serve the River Parishes area with our tried and true blend of tasty drive-in treats and local favorites.

Preservation Hall was built in 1750 as a private residence and is a famous live traditional jazz venue on St. Peter Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
The building, which survived the Great New Orleans Fires of 1788 and,another in 1794, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in theQuarter.

It hosts nightly concerts featuring a rotating roster of bands. The bands of Preservation Hall typically perform jazz in the New Orleans style.

There is no dance floor and neither food nor drink is served.

French Market in New Orleans.

During the pre Saints Super Bowl pep rally held in the French Quarter on Saturday February 6, 2010, this wonderful individual got on stage with the Treme Brass Band and lliterally started spreading his glowing energy around...I was amazed about his incredibly friendly personality and look! Who was he, what were the signatures on his hat? I guess, from friends all over than loved him, it could no be any other reason than that... what great a character and person...I have never ever seen anybody like that in my life...Only in New Orleans!

Clarence "Frogman" Henry (born March 19, 1937, Algiers, New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American rhythm and blues singer.
Fats Domino and Professor Longhair were young Henry's main influences while growing up. When Henry played in talent shows, he dressed like Longhair and wore a wig with braids on both sides.
His trademark croak, utilized to the maximum on his 1956 debut hit "Ain't Got No Home," earned Henry his nickname and jump-started a career that endures to this day. "You Always Hurt the One You Love" and "(I Don't Know Why) But I Do", both from 1961, were his other big hits.
Henry opened eighteen concerts for The Beatles across the U.S. and Canada in 1964, but his main source of income came from the Bourbon Street strip in New Orleans, where he played for nineteen years. His name could still draw hordes of tourists long after his hit-making days had ended. Clarence Henry's pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
In April 2007, The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame honored "Frogman" for his contributions to Louisiana music by inducting him into The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame.

The Mardi Gras Indians showed up at the "Katrina One Procession" with their outrageous costumes as usual.

The jazz funeral procession honored first responders and the victims of Hurricane Katrina and it was held in New Orleans on August 29, 2006, exactly one year later.

Jerry Lee Lewis (born September 29, 1935) is an American rock and roll and country music singer, songwriter and pianist. An early pioneer of rock and roll music, Lewis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and his pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #24 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[1] In 2003, they listed his box set All Killer, No Filler: The Anthology #242 on their list of "500 greatest albums of all time".

Lewis was born to the poor family of Elmo and Mamie Lewis in Ferriday in Concordia Parish in eastern Louisiana, and began playing piano in his youth with his two cousins, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. His parents mortgaged their farm to buy him a piano.

One New Orleans Procession
In the tradition of a Jazz Funeral

The Traditional New Orleans Jazz Funeral Procession was a 1.5 mile march, led by Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré, from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to the Louisiana Superdome. The procession included first responders, national, state and local elected officials, dignitaries, jazz musicians and the community at large.

The traditional jazz funeral procession honored first responders and the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A traditional New Orleans Jazz Funeral is a musical tribute honoring the passing of noted members of the community. This cultural ceremony is distinguished by an assemblage of musicians, usually featuring several brass band elements who stage a procession. The procession begins with the playing of the dirge, a slow, mournful, solemn tempo that expresses a somber respect for the deceased. At a certain point, the procession picks up the tempo and energy in celebration of the positive accomplishments of the individual and an acknowledgement of his or her zest for life.

This sign belongs to Doerr Furniture on Elysian Fields Ave., five blocks away from the French Quarter. I saw it while I was looking for a photographer swap meet held by George Long in New Orleans.

I love these old signs...this is America! (Since 1938). The sign does remind me of the one on Airline Motors in LaPLace, which was built in 1937-39.

Do you pronounce it Door? Have no idea, maybe that's why their logo has a door in it?
